Ya está por comenzar la etapa a matar o morir de la Copa del Mundo femenil, y hasta ahora las sorpresas están a la orden del día.
Lejos del tricampeonato
No hay duda de que, a diferencia del equipo masculino, la selección femenil de fútbol de Estados Unidos es una potencia. Sin embargo, pese a ser las grandes favoritas este verano para conseguir el tricampeonato, su quinto en total, no han estado a la altura en absoluto. Vencieron sin problemas a Vietnam en su primer encuentro, pero las debutantes terminaron siendo el peor equipo de todo el mundial. Después, en el reencuentro ante las holandesas, a quienes vencieron en la final hace 4 años, se vieron muy mal el primer tiempo, y batallaron para empatarlo al final. Por último, terminaron sobreviviendo ante Portugal, pidiendo la hora con un dramático 0-0, que terminó por calificarlas, pero en el segundo puesto. ¿El premio al USWNT por su terrible primera ronda? Ahora enfrentarán a Suecia, otra de las favoritas, que va con marca perfecta y tras haber goleado a 5-0 a Italia. El camino de las americanas se ha vuelto mucho más complicado, y no han estado ni cerca de su mejor nivel para pensar en su quinto título mundial.
Latinas decepcionan
Desafortunadamente (casi todos) los equipos latinoamericanos han quedado a deber. Costa Rica fue último de su grupo tras perder todos sus juegos y solo marcar un gol. Panamá, mismo caso, 3 encuentros, 3 derrotas, 11 goles en contra. Argentina llegó a 12 partidos en una Copa del Mundo femenil jugados sin conocer la victoria, el récord histórico de este torneo, y terminaron, también, últimas de su grupo. Incluso si sumamos a equipos no hispanos, como Haití, otro último lugar sin anotar un solo gol, o Brasil, la gran decepción de este torneo tras caer eliminadas en grupos, en general a las del continente americano les ha ido terrible. La grandísima excepción es Colombia. No solo son las únicas latinas hispanohablantes que han ganado un juego, sino que van líderes de su grupo tras un triunfo dramático al 97’ sobre una de las más grandes candidatas: Alemania. Esa victoria es fácilmente la más grande en la historia del futbol femenil cafetalero, y se ha ganado un lugar en la historia del deporte colombiano. Al cierre de edición faltaba solo el último partido de ese grupo, pero con un empate las colombianas amarrarían el liderato, y así evitar a Francia en octavos para medirse a Jamaica. Muchas goleadas
Comenzó un poco lento el mundial, pero ya hemos visto marcadores de escándalo. Holanda 7-0 Vietnam, Inglaterra 6-1 China, Noruega 6-0 Filipinas, Suecia 5-0 Italia, Alemania 6-0 Marruecos, España y Japón 5-0 a Zambia, así como el 6-3 entre Francia y Panamá. Las distancias siguen siendo amplias en el futbol femenil, pero ahora que empieza la ronda de octavos, esperamos partidos más parejos, y mucho drama.
The Crucial Stage Kicks Off
The win-or-go-home stage of the Women’s World Cup is about to begin, and so far surprises are the order of the day.
Far from the three-peat
There’s no doubt that, unlike the men’s team, the United States women’s soccer team is a juggernaut. However, despite being the big favorites this summer to win the threepeat, their fifth in total, they haven’t lived up to it at all. They easily beat Vietnam in their first match, but the debutants ended up being the worst team in the entire World Cup. Later, in the reunion against the Dutch, whom they beat in the final 4 years ago, they looked very bad in the first half, and they battled to tie it at the end. Finally, they ended up surviving against Portugal, asking for the final whistle with a dramatic 0-0, which ended up qualifying them, but in second place. The USWNT award for their terrible first round? Now they’ll face Sweden, another favorite, which has a perfect record and after having thrashed Italy 5-0. The path of the Americans has become much more complicated, and they haven’t been anywhere near their best level to think about their fifth world title.
Latinas disappoint
Unfortunately (almost all) the Latin American teams have been letdowns. Costa Rica was last in their group after losing all their games and only scoring one goal. Panama, same case, 3 games, 3 losses, 11 conceded goals. Argentina reached 12 matches played in a women’s World Cup without victory, the all-time record for this tournament, and they also finished last in their group. Even if we add non-Hispanic teams, such as Haiti, another last place without scoring a single goal, or Brazil, the great disappointment of this tournament after being eliminated in groups, in general those from the American continent have fared terribly. The grand exception is Colombia. Not only are they the only Spanish-speaking Latinas who’ve won a game, but they’re leading their group after a dramatic victory at 97′ over one of the biggest candidates: Germany. That victory is easily the biggest in the history of the cafetaleras women’s soccer, and has earned a place in Colombian sports history. At press time, only the last match of that group was missing, but with a tie the Colombians would ensure 1st place, and thus avoid France in the round of 16 to face Jamaica. Many beatdowns
The World Cup started a bit slow, but we have already seen scandalous markers. The Netherlands 7-0 Vietnam, England 6-1 China, Norway 6-0 Philippines, Sweden 5-0 Italy, Germany 6-0 Morocco, Spain and Japan 5-0 to Zambia, as well as the 6-3 between France and Panama. The distances are still wide in women’s soccer, but now that the round of 16 begins, we expect more even games, and a lot of drama
